Holocaust Remembrance Day was once again commemorated this year by the schools of Battipaglia. Delegations from four local institutions gathered at the Municipality of Battipaglia to reaffirm their commitment against discrimination in remembrance of the Holocaust.

The event, organized by the Mubat association in collaboration with the Municipal Administration and the Pro Loco Batti La Paglia, featured a structured program. It began with opening remarks from the Youth Policy Councilor, representing the Administration, followed by a speech from the President of the Pro Loco.

Mubat presented an analysis of the events of the Shoah based on online documents, particularly those from CDEC, a partner in the Avalanche project. The connection to digital resources also served as an opportunity to illustrate the chronological link between the city’s history during World War II.

It was, in fact, the Salerno landing and the subsequent occupation of central and northern Italy that accelerated the implementation of the “Final Solution” in Italy.

The study day continued with a guided exploration of the city’s streets, uncovering locations that today bear little trace of their wartime past, with the exception of the air raid shelter.

For the concluding session, the students returned to the Municipality of Battipaglia for the final segment of the event, curated by Mubat, the exhibition Lands of Avalanche, Lands of Remembrance was presented by its curator, Dr. Cecilia Conforti. The exhibition is dedicated to the martyr cities of Operation Avalanche, with a particular focus on Salerno and Cava de’ Tirreni, which hosted the Italian and Greek governments in exile.

At the conclusion of the event, another significant initiative took place on this important day for collective memory: the mayors of Pontecagnano Faiano and Campagna signed a memorandum of understanding with the mayor of Battipaglia for the promotion of the history related to Operation Avalanche.
