9th September, the operation Avalanche memorial at CWGC Salerno Cemetery

The cultural association Mu.Bat Museo Battipaglia, coordinator of the “Avalanche” project, has promoted, in collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Battipaglia, the remembrance of the fallen of Operation Avalanche on September 9 at the Commonwealth Cemetery.

The persistent rain that fell thickly from a leaden sky did not stop mayors, councilors, representatives of organizations and ordinary citizens. The Municipal Administration of Battipaglia, together with the Municipal Administrations of Salerno, Eboli, Montecorvino Rovella, Montecorvino Pugliano, Bellizzi, Olevano sul Tusciano, Campagna, Pontecagnano Faiano remembered the young soldiers who disappeared during Operation Avalanche.

A thought was also dedicated to the civilian victims of that dramatic event, and to the figure of General Vincenzo Ferrante Gonzaga, the first high Italian officer to be a victim of the Germans during the first night after the announcement of the armistice with the Allied forces.

This Remembrance is not intended to be a celebration of a battle but a warning: what happened must never happen again for the preserve of Peace in Europe, built on the sacrifice of so many people and still threatened today.

The event was an opportunity to open a common working table to undertake a path of valorization of the memory of the history of our territory.
